Civil Engineering

INTRODUCTION- Respected sir and dear friends today my seminar topic is quality control of concrete mix in plastic stage. Forever 150 years concrete has been widely used as a construction material and it is important for the civil engineering student to understand the over all concrete operation and the properties like the strength, durability, workability etc. and also ingredients like cement, sand, aggregates, water and admixtures if any. Having suitable knowledge of quality control mix of concrete and to apply it in construction work like road, bridge, building, dams, etc. The basic knowledge of concrete that is properties, its behavior, and various testing methods is an essential and important part of civil engineering student. DEFINATION- Quality control of concrete mix means to achieve the proper stability and durability of concrete mix.

WATER LEAKAGES IN BUILDING PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Leakage / dampness in any type of structure is one of the major problems. If such seepage or leakage is allowed to continue unchecked, unhygienic conditions will prevail and also the building may deteriorate to the extent that ultimately it becomes uninhabitable .the seepage occurs as a result of neglected maintenance, poor design and poor quality of construction in structure. Water is the main reason for leakage, seepage in the structures. The source of which can be from rainwater, leakage in poplins, condensation and ground water.

UTILIZATION OF WASTE PLASTIC BAGS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

Disposal of waste plastic bags from the domestic has become a become a major problem to the agencies in the cities. The waste plastic bags available in the dogmatic waste plastic mainly consist of lowdensity polyethylene .plastic bags dumped in the dustbins find their way into the drainage system and clog them. Often, these are burnt along the roadside ,which produces fumes causing air pollution. This seminar emphasizes on the laboratory evaluation on the bituminous mixes for utilization of plastic bags in the road construction.the laboratory performance studies were conducted on bituminous concrete mixes a dence mix used as a surface course in road construction.the laboratory studies proved that waste plastic enhances the property of the mix in addition to providing for the way for it

TWIN SHAFT UNDERWATER HIGHWAY CHANNEL

Highways have been a means of intensive network for a country and this is a dream come true through the pioneering works like Golden Quadrilateral project in India. Encapsulation of Highway and Structural engineering can create wonders. In context with this, Underwater Highway can be another feather in the cap. Underwater Highway can be of the essence if the highway reduces the traveling distance radically from one destination to the other and proves to be very much competent in the long run with reference to the fuel and time save. In this dissertation work, similar underwater highway segment, linking two major towns, Vasco and Panaji, has been taken for the structural analysis through finite element method. At present the distance between these two towns by road is around 32 Km. and is suppose to be abridged to 15 Km. through the underwater highway project. This project will help the state in promoting tourism and escalating the commerce between the two districts of Goa. In this dissertation work planning, aligning and structural analysis of underwater highway has been given due importance. Alignment has been carried out using the bathymetric data, which has been processed using software

TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY

Trenchless technology is a relatively new term that describes the installation of conduits beneath roadways without open-cutting. The term has been used on a global basis since the mid-1980s. However, some of the methods referred to as trenchless methods are not new. For example, auger boring and slurry boring have been used since the 1940s, and pipe jacking has been used since the early 1900s. These methods are referred to as road boring techniques or horizontal earth boring techniques. Nevertheless, many new trenchless techniques have been introduced and much advancement have taken place with the more traditional techniques. Although most of these methods require excavation for shafts, shaft locations usually can be selected to avoid or minimize traffic disruption.

THERMAL EXPANSION OF CONCRETE

Concrete structures and its members are under constant multi-axial stress and exposed to various temperatures. The purpose of this study is to clarify the thermal expansion of plain concrete under constant multi-axial stress. The thermal expansion of concrete between 20C and 100C, under constant compressive stress including tri-axial loading can be concluded to be equal to the sum of elastic deformation caused by external forces, the thermal expansion without external load and creep strain. The thermal expansion of air dried concrete and water saturated concrete is smaller than the thermal expansion of pre-heated concrete.

THE GOLDEN QUADRILATERAL

For raising the economy of the country transportation plays a very important role. Every day thousands of vehicles are running from one place to another, out of which several are crossing the state border. Considering the diesel & petrol usage wear & tear of vehicle accessories & transportation time, The National Highway Authority of India, proposed National Highway Development Project (NHDP). NHDP undertook the main responsibility of developing. - Golden Quadrilateral. Which connected the major cities of India. THE AESTHETICS OF PROPORTION IN STRUCTURAL FORM

This seminar Demonstrates that aesthetic concepts in engineering design are derived from various models of aesthetics. Designing is structure involves many considerations like social, cultural geographical and economical context. But mainly the functional requirements within the allocated budget. Engineering and Aesthetic are not isolated disciplines, having as they do tanks with many other discipliner as well. Therefore, a study related to engineering and aesthetic cannot be done is insulation. The main objection is to study basic proportioning system application. Also to investigate the subjective perception of geometric proportions. Aesthetic consciousness covers special sentiments, lasts, interest, concept, ideals, views and theories. So the intelligent and intuitive understanding of aesthetic proportion and their creative application in design is important.

TESTING OF HARDENED CONCRETE

This seminar includes Compression tests

SUPERPLASTICISERS FOR READY MIX CONCRETE PLANTS

Superplasticisers are high range water reducing admixtures..Admixture is defined as a material other than cement, water and aggregate that is used as an ingredient of concrete and is added to the batch immediately before or during mixing. The development of Superplasticisers is one the major break throughs in concrete technology, which will have a significant effect on the production and use of concrete in the next millennium. Superplasticisers have been greatly responsible for development of the following connects.1) High performance connects 2) High strength concrete 3) High durability concrete 4) Self compacting concrete 5) High volume flyash /slag concrete 6) Fibre reinforced concrete 7) Anti washout concrete under water.

SULFATE WASTES

INTRODUCTION- Sulfate wastes, in particular, fluorogypsum and phosphogypsum, can be used in stabilized base and/or subbase applications. These materials are stabilized using either lime and pozzolanic fly ash, Portland cement, or self-cementing fly ash. The stabilized base material is produced, placed, and compacted in essentially the same manner as other lime-fly ash or cement-stabilized base materials. Stabilized base mixtures containing sulfate wastes have strength development and durability characteristics that are comparable to those of conventional stabilized base materials. Any proposed use of phosphogypsum requires special petition to the EPA to demonstrate that the proposed practices will not result in any adverse health or environmental impacts.(1)

SPACE HOTEL

As tourism activities around the world grow to include more and more varied offerings, the idea of space tourism - members of the public making trips to and from low Earth orbit and beyond - has started to be recognized as a serious possibility. The subject of space tourism has also recently gained credibility among professional space organization

SMART MATERIALS

Over the past century, we have learned how to create specialized materials that meet our specific needs for strength, durability, weight, flexibility, and cost. However, with the advent of smart materials, components may be able to modify themselves, independently, and in each of these dimensions. Smart materials can come in a variety of sizes, shapes, compounds, and functions. But what they all share- indeed what makes them "smart"-is their ability to adapt to changing conditions. Smart materials are the ultimate shape shifters. They can also alter their physical form, monitor their environment, and even diagnose their own internal conditions. They can also do all of this while intelligently interacting with the objects and people around them. More boldly, it is highly likely that once smart materials become truly ubiquitous-once they are seamlessly integrated into a webbed, wireless, and pervasive network -smart materials will challenge our basic assumptions about, and definitions of "living matter." SILICA FUME CONCRETE

Silica fume is also referred to as micro silica or condensed silica fume but the term silica fume has been generally accepted. It is a by-product of manufacture of silica and ferrosilicon alloys from high purity quartz and coal in a submerged arc electric furnace. It is reported that the addition of ultra fine particle in HPC improves the strength of concrete. The optimum silica fume proportions in between 20% and 25% by weight of concrete. In it self silica fume does not have any binding properties, but it reacts with calcium hydroxide on hydration of cement and produces the gel i.e. calcium silicatehydrate which has good binding properties. Silica fume has been used in manufacture of high strength concrete

SELF COMPACTING CONCRETE

Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) is defined as a category of High Performance Concrete that has excellent deformability in the fresh state and high resistance to segregation, and can be placed and compacted under its self weight without applying vibration. SCC was first developed in Japan in mid 1980. Since then, it has found applications in reinforced concrete sections containing congested reinforcements. Poor quality of vibration of concrete, in congested locations, has often been a shortcoming of traditional concrete. In such situations, SCC, which flows under its self weight and does not require any external vibration, has revolutionized the concrete placement.

SEISMIC ISOLATION DEVICES

Many structures have their fundamental frequencies of vibration within the range of frequencies where the energy of most of the earthquake ground motions is a maximum. In such cases a structure will amplify the ground vibrations and produce accelerations, which increases from the base of the structure to its top. Besides producing undesirable levels of acceleration in the structure, these amplified structural motions can cause large stresses in structural elements and large relative displacements between different parts of the structure. This can result in permanent damage to parts of the structure or even to catastrophic collapse. The amplified accelerations throughout the structure act on the occupants and contents of the structure and can cause harm and damage to occupants and contents even when no structural damage occurs.

SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF ISOLATED BRIDGES

Bridges are lifeline structures. They act, as an important link in surface transportation network and failure of bridges during a seismic event will seriously hamper the relief and rehabilitation work. There are many cases of damage of bridges in the past earthquakes all over the world. Due to their structural simplicity, bridges are particularly vulnerable to damage and even collapse when subjected to earthquakes. The fundamental period of vibration of a majority of bridges is in the range of 0.2 to 1.2 second. In this range, the structural response is high because it is close to the predominant periods of earthquake-induced ground motions. The seismic forces on the bridges can be reduced if the fundamental period of the bridge is lengthened or the energy dissipating capability is increased. Therefore, the seismic isolation is a promising alternative for earthquake-resistant design of bridges. Considerable efforts have been made in the past two decades to develop improved seismic isolation design procedure for new bridges and comprehensive retrofit guidelines for existing bridges
